HISTORY: The flag of Zambia, adopted on October 24, 1964. Is a vibrant and symbolic representation of the country’s rich history, natural resources, and aspirations. The flag reflects Zambia’s transition to independence from British colonial rule and its emergence as a sovereign nation.
The Zambian flag consists of six horizontal stripes of different colours. The top stripe is green, followed by orange, black, and three more vertical stripes of red, black, and orange. These colours have distinct meanings that showcase Zambia’s natural beauty. Resources, and the resilience of its people.
The green stripe at the top represents the lush vegetation and abundant natural resources of the country. Below the green stripe, the orange stripe symbolises the country’s mineral wealth. The black stripe beneath represents the people of Zambia and the nation’s dark past of colonialism. The red, black, and orange stripes at the bottom symbolise the African people’s struggle for freedom and the sunsets over the Zambezi River.
In the upper-left corner (hoist side) of the Zambian flag. There is an orange eagle flying over three vertical stripes of red, black, and orange. The eagle represents the nation’s ability to rise above its challenges and soar to greater heights.
The Zambian flag stands as a powerful emblem of unity, natural wealth. And the aspirations of the Zambian people for a prosperous and harmonious future. Displayed with pride across the nation, it symbolises the collective identity and spirit of Zambia.
