HISTORY: The flag of Bhutan, adopted on January 8, 2008. Is a rich and meaningful representation of the country’s identity, culture, and values. Made of colourfast treated polyester material and measuring 60 x 90cm. The flag consists of a field of orange at the bottom, symbolising spiritual traditions and the Drukpa Kagyu Buddhism. And a field of yellow above, representing civil tradition and secular authority.
The dragon in the centre of the flag, known as Druk or the Thunder Dragon, is a distinctive feature. The white dragon grasps a jewel in its claws. Symbolising the wealth and protection of the nation. The dragon also represents the name of the country, Druk Yul, meaning the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
The colour red surrounding the dragon signifies the flourishing of the Buddhist spiritual tradition and the progress of the country. The dual-coloured division of the flag reflects the harmonious coexistence of spiritual and secular authority in Bhutan.
Displaying the flag is a proud expression of national identity and unity. Whether at government institutions, during national events, or by individuals celebrating their Bhutanese heritage. The colourfast treated polyester ensures the flag’s durability, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
The flag of Bhutan encapsulates the essence of the nation’s unique blend of spiritual and secular traditions, emphasising the importance of both aspects in the country’s identity and development.
