HISTORY: The flag of Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC) flag, is a symbol of the island nation’s complex political history and aspirations for democracy. Adopted on December 17, 1928. The flag has undergone modifications, reflecting the political changes in the region.
The design features a red field with a blue rectangle in the upper-left corner. Inside the blue rectangle is a white sun with twelve triangular rays. The sun represents the principles of freedom, equality, and brotherhood. While the twelve rays symbolise the twelve months of the year and the twelve traditional Chinese hours.
The red background is a symbol of the nationalism and revolutionary heritage of the Kuomintang (KMT). The political party that ruled China before the Chinese Civil War and retreated to Taiwan in 1949. The blue colour represents the ideals of democracy and freedom.
The flag is often associated with the political status of Taiwan. Which considers itself a sovereign state, while the People’s Republic of China (PRC) claims Taiwan as a province. The symbolism of the ROC flag, its presence in international events. And the recognition of Taiwan as a separate entity from the PRC contribute to the ongoing complex and sensitive geopolitical situation in the region.
