HISTORY: The Papua New Guinea Flag. A symbol of the nation’s identity and aspirations. Adopted on July 1, 197. Papua New Guinea gained independence from Australian administration. The flag encapsulates the country’s rich cultural diversity and natural beauty.
The design of the flag is characterised by two prominent features: the red and black diagonal elements that form an X shape on a golden-yellow background. The red elements represent the traditional colours used in tribal art and symbolise the link between Papua New Guinea’s past and future. The black diagonal elements, forming a saltire. Represent the country’s cultural heritage and the Papua New Guinea’s emergence as a new and independent nation.
The golden-yellow background represents the country’s wealth of natural resources and its bright and promising future. In the upper left corner, there is a white Southern Cross constellation. A significant feature in the Southern Hemisphere’s night sky. The five stars represent the Southern Cross’s four main stars and the smaller fifth star, representing Papua New Guinea’s commitment to progress and development.
