HISTORY: The tricolour flag, known as the Irish tricolour. Consists of three vertical stripes of green, white, and orange. Its creation is often attributed to Thomas Francis Meagher. A leader of the Young Irelanders during the mid-19th century.
Meagher unveiled the tricolour for the first time on March 7, 1848. The green stripe represents the nationalist Catholic community. Orange symbolises the unionist Protestant community. White in the middle signifies the hope for lasting peace and unity between the two.
The tricolour gained prominence as a symbol of Irish nationalism during the Easter Rising of 1916. Raised over the General Post Office in Dublin by leaders such as Patrick Pearse. Marking a pivotal moment in Irish history.
The flag is frequently displayed during national events, government ceremonies, and is a common sight at Irish embassies worldwide. The Irish flag serves as a visual representation of the shared identity and aspirations of the Irish people.
